Let’s be honest: you probably have more single socks around your house than you’d like to admit. Somehow, socks always manage to get separated from their pairs in the washing machine, no matter how careful you are. Plus, even your favorite pair of socks gets worn out over time, developing holes and stains.
But before you throw those stray or damaged socks into the trash, remember that there are many ways to repurpose them for cleaning around the house. Two professional cleaning experts share five easy tips for reusing socks for everyday chores like dusting, mopping, and more.
Use Socks for Dusting
There’s no need to buy a special dusting tool when you can just use old socks that you already have.
According to Kathy Cohoon, operations manager at Two Maids, socks—especially athletic ones—can go over your hands and serve as dusting mittens. Cohoon likes using socks to dust different areas of the house, such as baseboards, blinds, lamps, and bookshelves. She adds that they are also great for reaching difficult spots.
Don't Miss
Plants, both real and artificial, tend to collect dust as well, and Cohoon uses socks to wipe them down too.
Chris Willatt, founder of Alpine Maids, appreciates that wearing socks on your hands allows you to feel the textures of the items you’re dusting more accurately. This makes it easier to avoid damaging delicate items like art pieces or decorations.

Use Socks Instead of Cleaning Cloths
When it’s time to clean surfaces like countertops, mirrors, and windows, socks are handy once again, says Cohoon. She explains that socks give you a better grip than other cloths, making the job much easier.
Use Socks as a Mop Cover
Instead of buying a mop cover, just grab a sock, Cohoon suggests. When you're done mopping, simply remove the sock and toss it in the washing machine. It’ll be ready to use again soon.
Willatt agrees this is a great hack, especially since mop covers can be expensive. He finds that socks often do just as good a job—if not better. "The thickness of the sock often makes for a cleaner area due to its absorption of the liquid and the materials it picks up," he says.
Use Socks to Tackle Ceilings and Fans
Dealing with cobwebs on your ceilings? Try this hack from Cohoon: Place a sock over the handle of a broom and use it to clean high-up spots with ease.
While you're at it, use a sock to clean your ceiling fan as well, suggests Willatt. He finds long socks, like tube socks, are especially useful for this. With the fan turned off, wrap a sock around each fan blade and then pull it off slowly. "You may need to do some cleanup on the edges, but this trick will get at least 80 percent of the dust off your fan blades," says Willatt.
Use Socks to Wipe Down Pet Paws
Pets can track in all kinds of debris after being outside, which can make keeping a clean home challenging. However, you don't need anything fancy to keep your space dirt-free. Willatt suggests using old socks to wipe off your pets' feet when they come in from playing outside.
As a bonus, "You don’t have to worry about it slipping out of your hand or the dog wanting to play with it," he says.
